Welcome to Simple Sustainable Swaps
Making the sustainable choice is complicated. There are so many factors to consider including where is it made, how is it made, what is it made of etc. All of these considerations go into the environmental and social cost of its production, shipping, daily use and disposal.
Simple Sustainable Swaps will take the work out of sourcing environmentally friendly options for everyday items. They will be well-researched and tried and tested. The emphasis is on simple – the switches will be quick AND easy to make – this is not going to be about suggesting that you make all your own cleaning products or grow your own veg!
There will be a new swap each week to help you keep on track. Email subscribers will also get a handy PDF giving the key criteria we have used to make the recommendation as well as a link to buy and hopefully a few discounts thrown in from suppliers too!
Episode 1 – Ecovibe Compostable Sponges
Starting out strong, these are one of my favourite eco products I’ve tried so far, even if it is just a lowly sponge. In fact they are so good that even my husband has commented on them – and I think it’s fair to say that washing the dishes is not his favourite activity!
The key benefits of these are:
- They are plastic free (and therefore BPA free)
- They are made from cellulose from wood pulp, so all natural (and Vegan)
- As a result they are biodegradable and home compostable
- Cruelty free
- They seem to last well – I’ve been using mine for 2 months and it is as springy as ever
- Super absorbent
- If you want to sterilise just chuck it in the dishwasher, into boiling water or put it in the microwave damp
So not only will switching to these sustainable sponges mean you don’t have a piece of plastic crap to dispose of when it’s done, you also won’t be releasing microplastics into our water every time you scrub a pan.
You can check out all of their eco-credentials at the bottom of this post in our handy infographic.
How much is it and where do I get it?
You can buy direct from Ecovibe here.
It’s £3.99 (plus P&P) and you can use the following code to get 10% off (you’re welcome 😉):
(I don’t get anything in return for this one!)
That’s a wrap
I hope you like this swap as much as I do. It couldn’t be simpler to make the change but it will make a real difference – did you know that 400 million plastic sponges are thrown away each year in the US?
