Simple Sustainable Swaps – Abeego Food Wraps

Abeego Beeswax Food Wraps – cling film replacement

Let’s talk about cling film. Super convenient and still beloved by telly chefs (don’t even get me started, Mary Berry, as much as I love you). But not recyclable! Also, when you’re less than delicate it can be really annoying – sticking to itself, tearing on the roll – urghhhhh. So if you’re still using it, here’s a good cling film replacement for you which is completely guilt-free.

Episode 4 – Abeego Beeswax Food Wraps

The Product – a cling film replacement

Abeego claims to be the original beeswax wrap, created in 2008 in British Columbia, Canada.  The idea is that not only is it 100% natural, it actually keeps food fresh because it is breathable.  t’s therefore better for wrapping food than the cling film it replaces.

Beeswax wraps are essentially coated cotton.  They are stiff to touch initially but the warmth of your hands mean you can mould them around the food you are looking to store and it is self-adhesive.  They come in a variety of sizes to wrap small items like half an onion to large sticks of bread.

I use mine to cover bowls, to wrap my avocado halves (obvs) and I’ve now got a large one to keep my freshly baked bread fresh (yes, I am a domestic goddess).

Key points:

  • Reduces food waste which is one of the biggest issues in terms of sustainability with one third of all food produced going to waste
  • Hemp and 100% organic cotton plus natural beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil
  • Uses minimal energy to produce
  • Lasts for a year or more
  • When it’s done you can compost it or it makes a good fire lighter!
  • They don’t recommend re-waxing yourself
  • Wash in cold water otherwise you will melt the wax
  • Abeego is also zero waste – they make twist ties and fire starters with the excess.

You can check out all of Abeego’s eco-credentials at the bottom of this post in our handy infographic.
